Cuisine

Italian cuisine is one of the most popular cuisines in the world. It’s famous for its aromatic meat, flour and fish dishes. Pasta and rice are the basis of this cuisine (depending on the region), as well as tomatoes, olive oil, garlic and famous parmesan cheese. The most popular spices are basil, oregano and thyme. Italian cuisine is known for its delicious bread, cheeses such as mozzarella, gorgonzola and mascarpone, as well as chianti and prosecco.

You will also enjoy typical Mediterranean dishes, including light salads and seafood dishes. Italians start their meal with a starter (aperitivi), for example, bruschetta. Then the main course (primo) is served followed by a cold snack (secondo). One of the most interesting meals is a dessert with wine or coffee.

What should you try?

For a quick snack, choose a panini sandwich, which is an interesting alternative to a pizza. At lunchtime, try the original tortellini with spinach and ricotta cheese, or real Italian lasagna. You should definitely visit cafes where you can find delicious cakes, desserts and, of course, coffee. It’s worth trying a tiramisu or pannacotta, and on a hot day, you can have some delicious Italian ice cream.

How to get around Rome?

There is ground and underground subway, buses, trams and railways. The 24H hour ticket costs about EUR 7, and a one-time ticket costs around EUR 1.5, but the historic city center is worth visiting also on foot because the distances between the particular monuments are small.

Before renting a car in Rome, it is worth thinking about the historical center of the city. It is the place with limited car traffic. Moving around the city by car can cause problems related to parking and traffic jams. It will be more comfortable to use public transport and visit the city centre on foot.

Prices in the city

Italy may seem a bit cheaper country than other countries, such as Germany or France, but prices in Rome are the same as the prices in most European capitals. You should remember that Rome is one of the most tourist and crowded cities. This fact has an impact on prices. You will spend a lot of money on souvenirs, as well as on basic articles – including food (to find lower prices you should visit local supermarkets and hypermarkets).
